Description
It may be difficult to imagine a darkly colored black grass livening up a garden, yet that’s exactly why Black Mondo Grass is so widely known. This gorgeous variety densely spreads its vibrant hues of deep purple/black foliage along the undergrowth of its nearby companion plants. The unique shades of Black Mondo Grass are truly unparalleled, bringing a completely new depth of color scheme to any landscape. The rigid and colorful foliage also boasts a glossy sheen which helps to light up the dark lavender blossoms which come to life throughout summer. Black Mondo Grass, botanical name Ophiopogon planiscapus Nigrescens, is best suited to USDA zones 5-10 in partial and full sun. It reaches a height of 5 in. to 6 in. and continues to spread throughout each growing season. The foliage is a rich blackish-violet, while blossoms are colored lavender or pinkish-white. Black Mondo Grass is perhaps one of the most exciting plants for gardeners as these vibrantly dark colors clash wonderfully against green foliage.
