Description
Delve into the fragrant world of herbs! Herbs have been used since ancient times in cooking, as medicine and for fragrance. Ancient Egyptian papyruses detail the use of herbs for treating various illnesses, such as skin rashes and stomach pains. Romans and Greeks used dill and laurel to crown their leaders, and Romans also used dill to freshen up the smell of their banquet halls. When it comes to cooking, herbs are defined as the leafy, green parts of the plants, while the seeds, berries, bark, root, and fruit are ground up as spices; for medicinal purposes, all parts of the plant are called herbs. Different cultures have been drawn to using specific herbs that then become identified with the cuisine of those cultures like oregano and basil in Italian cooking, rosemary and thyme in Greek cuisine, cilantro in Spanish and Mexican dishes, mint in Middle Eastern foods. Growing herbs is an easy way to add flavor to your cooking and wonderful smells into your home. Lets get started!
