Gardeners also use marigolds as a cover crop to combat root-knot nematodes. Both the flowers and green foliage are aromatic when crushed or brushed. Long a decorative element in religious or ceremonial traditions, marigolds can be used to make DIY marigold garlands and other home decor creations. African marigolds, which are actually native to the Americas, are taller and more tolerant of hot, dry conditions than French marigolds. Likes a rich soil with regular watering.
